I asked at lunch if my friend could pass the salt. He started to but then paused, looked at the packet, and handed it to me without saying a word. Just a neutral object, like I'd reached for it myself. I stood up to pass it back because come on, even if we're not having a conversation, show some basic courtesy, like a here would do.
